Thomas was born about 1225 near Aquino in southern Italy and, against his family's wishes, joined the new Order of Preachers (the Dominicans). He studied under Albert the Great and became one of the most celebrated teachers at the University of Paris.
He wrote commentaries on Scripture and on Aristotle, the Summa contra Gentiles and, from 1265, the Summa Theologica, which he left unfinished after an experience at prayer in December 1273. He died on the way to the Council of Lyons in 1274.
