Augustine of Hippo

Augustine was born at Thagaste in North Africa in 354, to a pagan father and a devout Christian mother, Monica. A brilliant teacher of rhetoric, he spent years among the Manichees and in restless ambition until, in a garden in Milan in 386, he took up the Scriptures and was converted. Ambrose baptized him at Easter 387.

Back in Africa he was ordained against his wishes and became bishop of Hippo Regius in 395, serving there until his death in 430 while the Vandals besieged the city. His Confessions tell his story as a prayer to God; The City of God answers those who blamed Christianity for the sack of Rome.
