Benedict was born at Nursia in central Italy about 480 and sent to Rome to study, but he left the city's corruption to live as a hermit in a cave at Subiaco. Disciples gathered round him, and he organised them into small monasteries.
About 529 he founded the monastery of Monte Cassino, where he wrote his Rule and where he died about 547. Almost everything we know of his life comes from the Dialogues of Gregory the Great, written some decades later.
