As a young deacon Athanasius attended the Council of Nicaea with his bishop, Alexander, and in 328 he succeeded him as bishop of Alexandria. For the next forty-five years he defended the Nicene faith that the Son is fully God, of one substance with the Father.
Emperors took the side of his opponents, and he was driven into exile five times, once hiding among the monks of the Egyptian desert. Yet he outlived them and saw the tide turn before his death in 373.
