Tertullian was a well-educated Carthaginian who came to Christ as an adult and became the first major Christian author to write in Latin. In a stream of brilliant, combative works he defended Christians against pagan slanders, answered heretics such as Marcion and Praxeas, and called believers to strict discipline.
Around 207 he joined the New Prophecy (Montanism), a rigorist movement that claimed fresh revelations of the Spirit, and his later writings attack the mainstream church. He died some time after 220.
