Bede was given to the monastery of Wearmouth at the age of seven and spent his whole life in the twin monastery of Wearmouth–Jarrow in Northumbria. He gave himself, as he put it, to learning, teaching and writing.
He wrote commentaries on Scripture, works on time and the calendar, lives of saints, and above all the Ecclesiastical History of the English Nation, completed in 731. He died in 735, reportedly while finishing a translation of the Gospel of John into English. He was named a Doctor of the Church in 1899.
