Alonso Rodríguez was born at Valladolid, probably in 1538 (older accounts say 1526), and studied at Salamanca, where the preaching of a Jesuit moved him to join the young Society of Jesus at about twenty. Soon after his ordination he was given charge of novices, a task he carried out for many years.
He taught moral theology for twelve years at the Jesuit college of Monterrey in Galicia, served as a rector, and was spiritual father to the community at Córdoba. For the houses in his care he gave regular talks on the virtues of the religious life, and these, gathered and revised, became the Ejercicio de perfección y virtudes cristianas, printed at Seville in 1609 in three parts.
